Hidden Pampam Falls- Chasing Waterfalls in Iligan City

4:00 AM

All my life I've been craving for some one heck of an adventure and finally,it came true.

Iligan City is known as the City of Majestic Waterfalls. The city has around 23 identified waterfalls, can you imagine that? One of the famous tourist spot in Iligan is the Maria Christina Falls which is utilized for a Hydro Electric Powerplant that provides electricity in the south and some other parts of the country.

Another famous waterfall is the Tinago Falls which is flocked by  tourists. The word "Tinago" from the root word "Tago" in Cebuano means "hidden". I am not sure if it is the reason for it's name but Tinago is literally a waterfall that needs leg power to see it's beauty. You have to descend in an old winding staircase to get to the falls. To those who crave for adventure, this is for you!

Those are some famous waterfalls in Iligan City. My friends and I gave way to our adventurous spirits and decided to have a falls hopping in Dalipuga, Iligan City. We've planned this for a long time but we keep on rescheduling the trip. We actually don't know the way to the falls so we asked a favor to Manong Driver to just drop us to the entrance of the mountain. We rode a padyak to the foot of the mountain, had some chitchat with the driver and they offered to escort us to the falls which we accepted. We brought some foods with us for our lunch, water and some junkfoods. We made sure that our backpacks are light so it won't add up to out weight as we climb.

The first kilometre is okay since the trails are clear and the slope is not steep. We have a few stops for water, rest, and pictures. (Haha!)

On the move

I must admit that it's a bit scary going in a journey like this because you don't know what's in there but knowing that there's danger, it spices up the trip even more. One of our tour guides suddenly stopped near a small nipa hut in the middle of the forest and it made me think of the movie "Wrong Turn". A lot of what ifs came to my mind, what if they are rapists and they're leading us to their hide out and chop our bodies and rip our skins! lol that's gross. But seriously, evil thoughts flooded my mind because I can see it in his move that something is up.

Our legs started to swell as we climb higher. We have to climb a lot of rocks. I am catching my breath and I could hardly move my legs.  For adventure's sake! I know,I am guilty. I don't do a lot of exercise. One of my friends fainted so we have to stop for awhile and take care of her.

The sun is directly above us and  is weighing us down. We still have a long way to go so we have to keep moving. We have to walk in muds and slippery slopes. We are forced to remove our slippers to be safer. And what's worse is we have to do a "wall climbing stuff" in a cliff without a harness and only holding some plant roots and grasses sprouting in the wall of soil. Not to mention that I'm afraid of heights. Time to face my fear!

The climb is worth it when we finally arrived in the Pampam Falls. There are actually 8 waterfalls and this is the 7th falls we've passed. The 8th which has a cave underneath needs another climb and we are already out of fuel. We unpacked our  food and ate with our bare hands. We excitedly drowned ourselves in the cool flowing water of Pampam.

Waterfalls Hopping
A picture of happiness.

Some kids(tour guides) and other group of adventurous descended from the 8th falls joined us. Until it started raining. But the rain didn't stopped us from enjoying. While splashing ourselves in the water,an unexpected thing happened. Someone stole the things of the other group. The guys chase the thief but it's very slippery.

Thunders roared and it starting to get dark so we need to head down. The kids offered to guide us on the other side of the mountain. I would say that these kids are the best tour guides in the world. They are very entertaining and they never failed to assist us every time we almost slipped in the mud or our legs starts to give up. They crack jokes and they share their story with us. We found out that they've been in the forest since morning to gather firewood but ended up guiding people to the falls and earn extra money.(Such a clever idea). We are all drenched in the rain and walked in barefoot and the road is still far. We have to wrap our gadgets in a cellophane so it won't get soaked. "The road is next to that hill and to that hill." is our only motivation to continue walking. The kids (I couldn't remember the names) enlightened us that the path we passed when we entered the forest is very dangerous and is full of thieves. I guess we are saved because we prayed before we started the climb.

Visiting Pampam is a break from the fast urban life. Fresh air, cold flowing water, butterflies, birds and towering trees-one of the things you'll never experience in city life. Though an unexpected happened, I would still say that Pampam Falls is worth the climb and had feed my adventurous spirit. Actually, I'm hungry for more! For those who crave for an off the beaten track adventure, Pampam Falls is for you.
